I am writing this letter to thank you.
Thank you for introducing me to mountain biking all those years ago. I didn’t even know what the world of mountain biking really was and I sure didn’t know that some 25 years later I would still be in love with it.
Thank you for showing me a sport that has allowed me to travel the world and see some amazing places. Without the bike there would have been no reason to visit the peaks of the Colorado Rockies, to get seriously lost in California and fear for my life, see bears on the trails in Canada, see the amazing sunsets across the water in Queenstown, explore the mountains of Europe, or even find those lost gems in my own backyard that give me so many hours of fun.
Thank you for introducing me to all my friends. From day one the people I have met and ridden with have became my friends, the very best of friends. All around the world I have met of the most amazing and down-to-earth people and back home these same people are my best friends. Even meeting my wonderful wife was only because of my mountain biking friends.
Thank you for keeping me fit, active, and “healthy”. Yep, I have spent my time in the emergency room and on the surgeons table but I wouldn’t change a thing. I am on my bike almost daily and that keeps me healthy in so many ways…and also allows me a beer or two with a little less guilt.
Thank you for keeping me sane. My head is at times a little complicated but an hour or so on the bike and I am back to normal. Mountain biking lets me escape in so many ways and it’s more than physical.
Thank you for showing me something that would one day become my passion and now my job. Eskapee has been a long journey but wouldn’t have happened without that first ride.
Although time has passed, distance put between us, and we rarely see or get to ride with each other I will always remember you as the one who showed me mountain biking. Without that, my life wouldn’t be what it is today. So thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for showing me the world of mountain biking.
