LFTE: DON’T BE A TOSSER

WORDS & PHOTOS x Eskapee

tosser
noun
  1. a person or thing that tosses something.
  2. a person who masturbates (used as a general term of abuse).

Dear Bike Riders,

This is pretty simple really: don’t be a tosser. Don’t leave trash on the trails and please show some respect for the environment. And it doesn’t matter if you’re out for a casual ride or you’re racing, the same rule applies. If you can take it in, you can take it out.

It can’t get simpler than that so don’t be a tosser.

Dear MTB Industry,

Yep, there is a huge level of personal responsibility here but I think there is a critical role you can play as well. After all, you have the money, the reach, and the power to influence change. The world really is your oyster when it comes to what you might be able to do to help make the right changes, but to get the ball rolling here are some suggestions:

  • Tell all your Brand Ambassadors to preach the good word and by doing this maybe you can get your “influencers” to actually “influence”.
  • Dedicate a percentage of your revenue on marketing and advertising campaigns to encourage your customers to do the right thing.
  • Start a wrapper buy back scheme where customers can send back their empty wrappers in exchange for a reward. That has the added bonus of enabling you to recyle them too.
  • Get all sciencey with your wrappers, not just their contents, and make them edible. Yeah, you could do “bio-degradable” but from what I have witnessed that solution tends to create even more trash as people seem to change their mindset and think that leaving trash is somehow now good for the environment? Plus, it looks pretty shitty next to trails for the 10 or so years it takes to degrade.
